a workshop for children and butterflies
Introduction
Like children, butterflies are deep and powerful representations of life. Drawing a parallel in an artwork between butterflies and children comes naturally and by uniquely combining them in an artwork increases a feeling for life. Viewing the work brings the viewers into joyful and carefree mood and lets them reminisce with positive thoughts on life filled with hope and faith.
The Augmented Reality project “We AR Butterflies” is not only an artwork for children, it is one that is made by children, because the artwork seen is the results of a hands on workshop for children of any ages, which teaches them how to transform themselves using a process of creative metamorphosis into colourful butterflies with using post-its, a mobile phone and some computer magic.
Making butterflies that fly around lawns, gardens, playgrounds, or even in a gallery is done by using simple post-its of various colors, which are placed onto the face. Once the post-its are in place and the child is convinced that he or she has been transformed into a butterfly, a selfie images is made with a mobile phone, which is then used as a texture on a 3D virtuale butterfly’s wings. The 3D virtuale butterflies flutter through the gardens and can be seen by using a dedicated application on any mobile phone or tablet.

Space: The workshop can take place inside or outside.
Time: The workshop can last from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the number of participants. It takes a child about 30 to 45 minutes to create his/her own version of ab AR butterfly. So children can come and go.
Materials: All materials are supplied and not special set up or light is needed. A table and chairs inside or outside is about all that is needed to run the workshop. The instructor teaches the children all what they will need to do and assist them in making the selfies.
Once the textures for the butterfly wings is created, the creation of a virtual butterfly is carried out by the instructor in a a few moments and the children can go searching for themselves as butterflies inside or outside, depending what was decided.
Access to the installation is accomplished by mobile phone or tablet.
